Want to sleep better? Part One

 We have  all been there. Yawning and sluggish, dragging  around  feeling as if  the day should be over when it’s only  two o’clock  . More sleep is what we need. And better sleep for sure. How can we make the most of those  valuable hours  of reposethat prepareus for the next day ?

Midland Self Storage wants you to get the sleep you need . Here’s some ideas to make your slumber sweeter  satisfying  .

*  Recognize your uniqueness.   Yes, there are general rules for  getting proper  sleep. But every person is  distinct.  Sleep tricks that work for your  buddy  may not  be good  for you. It may require that you attempt  different techniques to  find your best  sleep habits  which  work for you. Keep trying until you  can personalize  your sleep routine.

*  Make sure you remain disciplined.   In past  days television stations signed off at midnight . There was an end to the broadcast day.  They would throw on  the National Anthem and the screen would go fuzzy white. Entertainment over.  Then you’d go to bed. Today cable channels never stop.  They run 24/7/365. With this kind of coverage,  it becomes  easy to watch movie after movie after infomercial instead of going to sleep.  When the entertainment does not stop, we do not stop ourselves.

A key to  getting good  sleep is consistency. Doing your best to

 crash   at the same time each night and rise the same time each morning helps to set your “internal clock”. And though it may be tempting to sleep in on a Saturday morning, maintain your schedule seven days a week. If you sleep in on the weekends you will  throw off  your body’s rhythm and your Monday through Friday schedule will be messed up .

* Nap wisely.  I know I wish I could go back and take all the naps my Mom tried to make me take as a kid . I wonder now why I ever threw a fit and demanded that I be kept out of the comfort of a soft, warm bed. As adults, a nap is good for us, too. But we need to be careful about  siesta times  . A nap too long or too close to bedtime might actually contribute to insomnia.  So, just take short naps during your workday when your boss is not aware and you will avoid this problem.  That was a joke.

* Get good and tired. Remember how well you  tend to sleep  after a  full  day of physical work? How your head hits the pillow and you’re down for the count all night?  Solid exercise taken  during the day, be it in the course of your work or exercise at the gym, will help you sleep well at night. 

* Melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced by our bodies. In God’s amazing design,  melatonin happens to be  light sensitive. Our body  makes  less melatonin during the day when light is bright and produces more at night when lights are lower. The increase in melatonin in the evening encourages sleep.  (Can you trick your body with sunglasses during the day?) 

Anyway, as we  age  , our body produces less melatonin. But thankfully, It’s a natural and inexpensive supplement you can  grab  wherever you buy your vitamins. The advantage of melatonin is that it’s natural and doesn’t  give you  the “hangover effect” that over the counter sleep aids typically offer  .
